Competitively inhibits aldosterone, thus preventing sodium reabsorption in the distal tubule.
Also potentiates thiazide and loop diuretics.
Indications
Particularly useful in the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure (when hypokalemia may potentiate digoxin toxicity) and hepatic failure (when hypokalemia can precipitate hepatic encephalopathy ).
Used in combination diuretic therapy (with thiazides and furosemide).
